When I’m asked why our leadership programs place such great emphasis on communication, the meaningful words of Gandhi ring in my ear. He astutely proclaimed, “Carefully watch your thoughts, for they become your words. Manage and watch your words, for they will become your actions…Acknowledge and watch your habits, for they shall become your values.”
We look at communication, first, to see how our beliefs, conditioning and interpretations of the world, shape our lives and the lives of the people we interact with. This is important because how we speak to both ourselves and our team is a reflection of our core values. The values being that unshakable stuff that makes us who we are.
It makes sense, then, that to successfully support and guide a team through difficult times, you have to be firmly grounded in your principles. Because our thoughts and speech both shape and are a product of the values we hold dear, they should often be considered, adjusted and realigned to meet our intention and desired outcomes.
Our leaders often express to us frustration that their good intentions are hampered by the challenging realities of deadlines, bottom lines and targets. “I don’t want to be the bad guy all the time but how else will things get done?” asked one leader. Can you relate to this ongoing struggle of balancing values, goals and interpersonal communication?

- In times of difficulty, what are my go-to thoughts/feelings?
- How do my thoughts and emotions impact my communication with others?
- How does pressure affect my communication style? (I.e. when a deadline nears, or when I have to make a tough decision, do I become reactive, hyper-focused, withdrawn, or erratic?).
- In what manner do I address my staff when they express concern over their workload?
- In what ways do I supply comfort and exude confidence in times of fear and uncertainty?
- What’s the conversation in my head when I’m trying to take care of others, but I’m not ok?
